πŸš” Two men charged after illegal firearm found during traffic stop

Two men from West Bay, aged 24 and 27, have been charged after police discovered an unlicensed firearm during a traffic stop in George Town, Cayman Islands. The police stopped and searched two vehicles that appeared to be travelling together along North Church Street in the early hours of Sunday morning. The cars were stopped on Mary Street near McField Lane, and when officers approached the drivers, they appeared to be intoxicated. 🍻

A black handgun was found in one of the vehicles, leading to the arrest of the two men on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm. The second vehicle was also seized as evidence, although no illegal items were found during its search. The driver of the second vehicle, a 31-year-old man also from West Bay, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving whilst disqualified and other driving offences. He has since been bailed as the investigation continues. 🚨

Last year, the police seized 23 illegal guns, and so far this year, they have seized another eight. Police Commissioner Kurt Walton has stated there are at least 90 illegal guns on the streets of the Cayman Islands that have been used in past crimes. The police continue to address what Walton has referred to as the β€œinsatiable appetite” of young men in the area for guns. πŸ”«
