πŸŽ™οΈ Sir Alden McLaughlin expected to be nominated as Parliament Speaker

Parliament members are set to convene on Thursday to nominate and elect a new speaker, as well as discuss an amendment to the pensions law. The amendment would allow Caymanians in the private sector to access funds to pay off mortgages or purchase property. According to the Cayman Compass, Sir Alden McLaughlin is expected to be nominated as speaker. McLaughlin, who has held every role in parliament except that of speaker, stated that he would accept the job out of love for his country. πŸ—³οΈ

After the vote, the parliament, with members in their new seats and the government benches led by new premier Juliana O’Conner-Connolly, will debate the National Pensions Amendment bill (2023). This bill, brought to the House by Chris Saunders MP, would enable Caymanians to take money from their private sector pension to pay towards a mortgage or residential land loan. MPs are also expected to debate the Beneficial Ownership Transparency Bill, 2023, which is aimed at maintaining Cayman’s adherence to international financial regulations. The public can attend the proceedings in person or follow on Radio Cayman and CIGTV as well as government’s various social media channels. 🏦
