🚨 Serial scammer squanders stolen funds on gambling

Judith Douglas, a 58-year-old woman, was convicted for the third time for conning people out of their money, only to spend it on gambling. Douglas, who was previously jailed for stealing CI$1.85 million in a status scam, stole over CI$50,000 from more than 32 people just months after her release from jail. Despite repaying around CI$14,000 to some of her victims, most of the individuals she scammed remain out of pocket. 🎰

Defence attorney Jonathon Hughes revealed that Douglas had gambled away at least $40,000 of the stolen money. She continued to take money from victims and gamble in a desperate attempt to win back the money and repay the prospective tenants. Douglas, who is now in custody, has only recently acknowledged her gambling addiction and has sought help from a psychologist. However, since her return to jail, she has received no assistance from the prison service for her addiction. 🏦

Despite her past, Douglas expressed "profound regret and remorse" and pleaded for professional help for her gambling addiction. The crown argued there was no evidence that Douglas had gambled away the stolen money and sought a compensation order for her victims. Justice Cheryll Richards, presiding over the case, will deliver her sentencing ruling on 28 February. 🏛️
