šŸ”’ Scammers exploit CNS logo to deceive Cable and Wireless email users

Scammers have been exploiting the logo of Cayman News Service (CNS) in a phishing scam aimed at users of Cable and Wireless's candw.ky email addresses. The fraudulent email, which bears no connection to CNS or its daily news updates, features a fabricated news story about a police investigation into the death of a former premier, who is in fact alive and well. The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) has issued an advisory warning people not to click on the link contained in the email, which is designed to harvest personal details, including passwords and email addresses. šŸš«

It is understood that the scammers acquired the candw.ky email list some time ago and have been using logos of various local news organizations to distribute fake news to those still using Cable and Wireless email addresses. These addresses are no longer secure. CNS has contacted OfReg, the telecoms regulator, to determine whether Cable and Wireless has informed its users about the email list hack and to explore possible measures to prevent scammers from exploiting these lists for criminal activity. A response is awaited. For cyber security advice, visit www.exploregov.ky/cybersafe. šŸ”’
