šŸ¦  Respiratory illnesses expected to rise due to new COVID variant

The Ministry of Health and Wellness anticipates a rise in respiratory illnesses during the holiday season and into January due to increased travel, gatherings, and the emergence of the JN.1 strain of COVID-19. The World Health Organization has classified JN.1 as a variant of interest. The variant, which has an additional mutation in the spike protein compared to its parent lineage BA.2.86, is being closely watched due to its increased transmission. Despite this, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nick Gent reassures the public that there is no cause for alarm at this stage. šŸŒ

While the Health Services Authority (HSA) has yet to secure any COVID-19 vaccines, seasonal flu shots are available. The public is advised to stay home if they exhibit symptoms of a respiratory infection, including COVID-19, influenza, or the common cold. In addition to monitoring the COVID-19 situation, the Public Health Department is also keeping a close eye on the rise in dengue fever cases. The Mosquito Research and Control Unit is taking action by spraying areas where the illness has been detected. Health Promotion Officer Therese Prehay encourages the public to help by ensuring their surroundings are free of mosquito breeding sites. šŸ¦Ÿ
