RCIPS officers struggle to curb speeding despite issuing over 4,000 tickets

🚔 Record-breaking number of speeding tickets issued this year

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) has issued a record-breaking number of speeding tickets since the start of the year. Despite this, drivers continue to exceed speed limits on the roads. Over 4,000 tickets were issued in the first ten months of this year, marking a 30% increase from the total number of tickets issued in the previous year. 🚨

At recent community meetings, speeding was a key concern raised by the public, leading to calls for a greater police presence and more ticketing to reduce speeding. However, Police Commissioner Kurt Walton warned that issuing tickets alone will not solve the problem. He emphasized the need for drivers to change their behavior, advising them to adhere to speed limits, avoid illegal overtaking, follow roundabout rules, indicate turns, and avoid distractions while driving. 🚗

Walton also highlighted the importance of education in changing driving behavior and the ongoing efforts of the RCIPS, alongside other government entities, as part of the National Road Safety Strategy (NRSS). The NRSS aims to reduce road fatalities, improve the road network, enhance traffic legislation, and improve the overall driving experience in the Cayman Islands. Despite these efforts, Walton stressed that unless drivers slow down, collisions, serious injuries, and fatalities will continue to occur. 🚦
