👮‍♂️ Plainclothes officer thwarts machete attack in George Town

A plainclothes police officer patrolling downtown George Town, in the early hours of Sunday, managed to prevent a potential machete attack. The officer, along with a colleague, was on foot patrol around Seafarers Way and Cardinal Avenue when they were alerted to a disturbance. They subsequently encountered a man armed with a machete, who was preparing to assault another individual. The officers promptly identified themselves and one of them, in a bid to prevent loss of life, drew his service weapon on the armed man. The man complied with the officers' instructions, put down the machete, and was later arrested on suspicion of possessing a restricted weapon and other related offences. He remains in custody pending further investigation. 🚔

Queries have been raised as to why an officer, who was not in uniform and not part of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) Firearms Response Unit, was carrying a gun while patrolling the streets of the capital. In response to these concerns, a spokesperson stated that they were unable to comment as it pertained to "operational tactics". 🤐
