Illegal trade of protected species thwarted by Department of Environment

🦜 One person apprehended for attempting to sell endangered Grand Cayman parrot

An individual has been arrested following an attempt to sell a Grand Cayman parrot on various social media platforms. The bird was seized and handed over to a vet for care. The Department of Environment (DoE) was alerted to the situation by concerned residents who spotted posts featuring the caged bird. This led to an investigation and subsequent arrest. The Grand Cayman parrot, while not as critically endangered as the Cayman Brac parrot, remains a threatened species and is the National Bird of the Cayman Islands.🦜

The DoE has extended its gratitude towards the conservation officers and the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) for their exceptional work on the case. As the investigation continues, the DoE has reminded the public that poaching, trading, and keeping Cayman parrots is illegal under the National Conservation Act. Only parrots registered during the 2018-19 amnesty period are permitted in captivity. The DoE has urged anyone who is offered an unregistered Cayman parrot to report it to the DoE conservation officers or to 911 if they witness active poaching or disturbing of wild nests.🚨
