🏫 New high school approved for Cayman Brac

Cabinet greenlights education ministry's proposal amidst concerns over potential costs

🏫 New high school approved for Cayman Brac

The Cayman Islands government has approved a proposal for a new high school on Cayman Brac, according to recently released Cabinet meeting notes. The decision was made during the 23 November meeting, marking the first official act since former premier Wayne Panton was ousted. Despite the approval, the project has raised eyebrows due to the potential cost and the island's declining population. 🏝️

With the Cabinet's approval, funding will likely be allocated in the upcoming budget to allow the education ministry to commence the school's construction. The project is estimated to cost around CI$50 million, with over $4 million already allocated in the current spending plan. Education Minister Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, who is now the premier, has defended the project, citing the deteriorating condition of the current Layman E. Scott Sr High School, which was built in the 1960s. 🏫

Earlier this year, parliament also voted in favor of a motion for a new high school in West Bay, but that project has not yet been formally approved by the Cabinet. The proposed school is not only expected to meet the growing district needs but also to help improve the government's provision of education, reduce traffic congestion to and from George Town, and serve as a shelter and recreational facility. 🚸
