📚 NAU introduces new policies to enhance financial assistance programs

The Needs Assessment Unit (NAU) is set to transform into the Financial Assistance Department, backed by new legislation for future welfare needs in Cayman. The Ministry of Social Development has introduced several enhancements to financial assistance programs to provide better support. These include immediate relief for emergency situations, increased funds for accommodation, food, and utilities, a one-time rental deposit of up to $3,000, and new payments for internet, phone, and transportation. The changes aim to help those living on the poverty line and are aligned with the Financial Assistance Act, 2022, which will be fully implemented later this year. 🏠

Minister André Ebanks, who took over the Social Development portfolio after the 2021 General Elections, is driving these changes. He aims to help those who can work to get back into employment and remove barriers for those living in poverty. With the challenge of finding affordable accommodation and the requirement to pay an upfront deposit, the unit can now provide a one-off deposit to landlords to secure stable housing for families in need.
