šŸ‘® Man sentenced to prison for possession of firearm

Mikael Antonio Williams, a 29-year-old resident of George Town, was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison in December 2022. The sentence came after a loaded 9mm pistol and additional ammunition were discovered at the home he shared with his partner and her adult daughter. Williams confessed to possessing the firearm and disclosed its location when police arrived with a search warrant. He claimed that he was forced to hold the weapon by gang members who threatened him at gunpoint.šŸ”«

Despite Williams' claims of being press-ganged into holding the weapon, the court did not consider any exceptional circumstances related to the charge. The ruling did not indicate that Williams provided any details about the alleged gang members. There was also no evidence to suggest that the firearm had been used in a crime. Justice Frank Williams determined that the primary objectives in this case were deterrence and rehabilitation. The judge set an initial sentence of eleven years, but reduced it by two and a half years for Williams' guilty plea and by another year for his cooperation with the police search. Williams was also sentenced to two years for possessing 19 rounds of ammunition, which will be served concurrently with the other sentence.āš–ļø
