πŸš— Increase in traffic and accidents on Cayman's roads

The number of licensed drivers on Cayman’s roads has surged from 53,779 in 2020 to 62,798, leading to increased traffic congestion and accidents. The number of crashes rose from 2,167 in 2020 to 3,196 by the end of 2023, resulting in nine fatalities and 22 serious injuries. Despite the growing problem of congestion, the government has not implemented measures such as a comprehensive public transport plan or incentives for staggered work hours. Instead, they are focusing on a road safety campaign that encourages drivers to take a pledge. 🚦

Drivers in the Cayman Islands come from over a hundred different countries, each with their own driving standards and rules, leading to confusion and challenges on the roads. Traffic offences have also increased, with over 10,700 recorded in the last year compared to 7,651 in 2020. Speeding violations alone rose by almost 700 cases. Despite these statistics, the government continues to focus on the road safety campaign and driver pledge. 🌍

Eric Bush, Chairperson of the National Road Safety Committee, stated that the solution does not lie with the police force alone. He emphasised the importance of community involvement and individual responsibility in improving road safety. Bush urged the nearly 63,000 registered drivers, as well as their families, friends, and neighbours, to take the pledge to drive responsibly. 🚨
