National Roads Authority proposes short-term solutions to manage growing congestion

🚗 Grand Harbour traffic set to increase by 57% by 2036, warns NRA

The National Roads Authority (NRA) has forecasted a 57% increase in daily traffic at the Grand Harbour Roundabout within the next eight years, translating to over 28,000 additional cars. The projection is part of a proposed road improvement plan that identifies numerous issues, including heavy traffic, poorly functioning intersections, and poor driving habits, all of which are expected to worsen with the increasing volume of traffic. 🚦

To combat the growing congestion at Grand Cayman's most problematic traffic hotspot, the NRA has proposed several short-term solutions. These include redesigning the four roundabouts along the corridor, introducing traffic signals, modifying and restricting exits, adding pedestrian crossings, and implementing dedicated direction lanes. A flyover for the area has been ruled out due to geometric constraints, construction impacts, and costs. The NRA is currently seeking public input on the plan and its proposals before making a final recommendation to the ministry responsible for roads. 🚧

In addition to roadway improvements, the NRA highlights the need for other policy measures to address the significant traffic issues faced by Grand Cayman's drivers. Suggestions include relocating more employment to Bodden Town and East End, integrating mixed-use spaces with transit services and pedestrian facilities, discouraging car ownership through import regulations or attractive public transport systems, promoting telecommuting or home-working, and improving sidewalks and bike lanes. 🚴‍♀️
