Investigation underway to determine cause of fire at HMP Northward
The HM Cayman Islands Prison Service is currently investigating a fire that broke out in the high-risk unit of HMP Northward. The unit houses category A prisoners, and the fire reportedly began in a prisoner's cell. Smoke was detected by prison officers, who discovered a small fire on an inmate's mattress. The fire was quickly extinguished by the officers.🚒
Emergency services were dispatched following a call to the Department of Public Safety Communications’ 911-Centre. Two prisoners were taken to George Town Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation, along with three prison officers. All five individuals have since been discharged.
