🚒 Disabled cargo ship towed away from Little Cayman

Assistance from multiple vessels prevents potential marine pollution

🚒 Disabled cargo ship towed away from Little Cayman

The SC Montana, a Liberian freighter vessel, experienced engine failure late Tuesday evening and was still in local waters off the southwest coast of Little Cayman on Wednesday morning. However, the ship is now bound for Cuba. The LEFKES and the Aruna Cihan bulk carrier vessels provided assistance to keep the SC Montana away from Little Cayman’s coastline. The Navigator, a port authority tug from Grand Cayman, was also dispatched to help, according to the Cayman Islands Coast Guard. 🚒

Neither of the docks on Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are equipped to handle the disabled vessel. While all crew members and cargo on the Montana are currently safe, it remains unclear how the ship will be repaired. The Department of Environment is aware of the potential risk and is prepared to act if necessary to prevent potential marine pollution. Acting Governor Franz Manderson and Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly met with representatives of the CICG, Hazard Management Cayman Islands, the DoE and other key stakeholders to discuss mitigation steps. 🌊
