🥚 Department of Agriculture launches EggsUp program to support local families

The Department of Agriculture (DoA) has teamed up with local charity, Resilience Cayman, to launch the EggsUp programme. This initiative is set to provide fresh local eggs to Caymanian families with children during the summer months. The eggs are donated by the National Egg Strategy (NEST) initiative, a programme aimed at creating a safe, productive domestic egg sector in the Cayman Islands. The EggsUp programme was launched on 21 July and will run for a three-month pilot period. 🐔

While the eligibility criteria for the programme and the number of benefiting families have not been disclosed, the Ministry of Agriculture has stated that eligible families can receive up to two trays of fresh local eggs per week. The success of the programme and its collaboration with Resilience Cayman is yet to be measured. The Ministry has not disclosed how much it is paying for the eggs donated to the EggsUp programme. However, the initiative is seen as a crucial step towards enhancing food security and supporting local agriculture, especially amidst rising food costs. 🍳

Resilience Cayman, which has previously supported over 4,000 families during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, is enthusiastic about the partnership. The EggsUp initiative is seen as a vital tool in managing food inflation and ensuring access to nutritious food for local families. The collaborative efforts of the DoA, the Ministry, and Resilience Cayman reflect a shared commitment to community well-being and food security. 🌽
