šŸ‘Øā€āš–ļø CIG accused of squandering public funds in legal tussle with Doctors Express

The Cayman Islands Government (CIG) has been accused of wasting hundreds of thousands of public dollars in a drawn-out legal battle with Doctors Express. The dispute began following an unlawful ban on prescription cannabis medicines and an illegal raid on the clinic in 2019. The Grand Court recently ordered government lawyers to hand over documents that could potentially reveal why no public official has ever been prosecuted for the raid and subsequent cover-ups. šŸ“‘

Doctors Express Director, Sam Banks, stated that the government has deployed at least ten lawyers over the past five years to defend the "indefensible and illegal actions of their agents". Despite an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission following the court's findings of serious wrongdoing and collusion by authorities, no charges were ever brought. Doctors Express and its associated company, Kaiser Day, were granted another judicial review to determine why. Banks welcomed the court's decision to order the government to reveal this information, stating that "decisions of public officials must be exposed to the sunlight of public scrutiny". āš–ļø

Banks further revealed that since the raid, the business has had to "fight the Government at every stage". He criticized the government for wasting significant public funds to defend the actions of their agents, with at least six Cayman government lawyers and four London lawyers being instructed to resist the clinic's efforts to obtain justice. Despite the ongoing legal battle and undisclosed costs to the government, Banks affirmed the team's commitment to continue their fight for justice. šŸ„
