🚦 Cayman Islands' transport policy development lags

Infrastructure Minister Jay Ebanks has revealed that the Cayman Islands' public transportation policy is far from completion. In response to a parliamentary question, Ebanks stated that there is "no right answer" to the successful rollout of a public transportation system. To help find a solution, several experts from the UK's Department of Transport have been seconded to the Cayman Islands. Information from a previously conducted Deloitte report, which cost $200,000, has been passed on to these experts to aid in their task. πŸ“

The Ministry is also working on a business case to merge the National Roads Authority, the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing, and the Public Transport Unit into a Department of Transport. This marks the first time a government has prioritised public transport, according to Ebanks. Despite public concerns, the minister has not offered any timelines or interim solutions for the traffic congestion issue, one of Grand Cayman's most pressing problems. Instead, he asked for understanding and assured that the ministry is actively seeking solutions. 🚍

While Ebanks acknowledged the current road safety campaign in response to questions about this budget cycle's actions, he did not suggest any immediate policy changes that could have an impact. Suggestions such as school buses for private schools or introducing flexi-time for government employees were not addressed. 🚧
