🔒 Cayman Islands Government allocates $2.4 million for new detention centre

The Cayman Islands Government has approved a proposal to allocate an additional $2.4 million in public spending for the construction of a new detention facility for irregular migrants. The decision was made in response to the increasing number of migrants, predominantly from Cuba, and the escalating risk associated with potential mass arrivals. The project is deemed a necessary enhancement to national security and a humanitarian response to the growing migrant crisis. 🌍

The new facility will replace the existing Bodden Town Civic Centre, which has sustained extensive damage due to makeshift modifications by migrants and a fire incident in September 2023. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to securely house and monitor 180 people in permanent structures, with a surge capacity to accommodate an extra 144 people in short-term housing. The centre will be equipped with modern security systems and constructed using resilient materials capable of withstanding extreme conditions. This move is seen as a forward-thinking measure to strengthen the Cayman Islands' ability to manage future challenges in migration. 🏗️

Migration flows in the region are predicted to increase significantly in the coming years due to the impact of climate change. This new facility is expected to address the potential spikes in migrant numbers and ensure the safety and dignity of those housed within. The government is yet to release the outline business case supporting the project. 📈
