šŸ›ļø Cayman Islands Court of Appeal rejects civil partnership challenge

The Cayman Islands Court of Appeal has denied Kattina Anglin's attempt to challenge the local civil partnership legislation in the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC). Anglin's appeal, which questioned the governor's power to pass a law allowing same-sex unions, was dismissed by the higher court in July. However, Anglin sought to take the case to London. The Court of Appeal dismissed the application, stating it did not raise an arguable point of law of great general or public importance that should be considered by the JCPC. šŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆ

Justice Sir John Goldring, CICA president, wrote in the ruling that all issues raised by Anglin have been thoroughly considered by two courts with consistent rulings. He also dismissed arguments about the meaning of the words "a matter with respect to external affairs" and stated that the appeal was academic since the governor had an alternative means of implementing the legislation. Goldring also dismissed claims of discrimination if leave to appeal was refused, stating that Anglin could still seek special leave from the JCPC directly. Local LGBT activists, Colours Caribbean, welcomed the ruling. šŸ“œ
