Debate over potential constitutional amendment for at-large political representatives

🗳️ Cayman Islands considers introducing territory-wide MPs

The Cayman Islands is currently the only British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean without "at-large" or territory-wide elected political representatives in its legislative body. This contrasts with other territories such as the British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, Anguilla, and Montserrat, all of which have at-large representatives. The possibility of amending the Cayman Islands' constitution to introduce at-large MPs is being discussed, with many believing it would be beneficial. The UK is expected to be supportive of such a change. 🇬🇧

However, the introduction of at-large MPs is not seen as a cure-all for political corruption. The British Virgin Islands, for instance, despite having at-large representatives, experienced corruption-related issues last year. In the Turks and Caicos Islands, there are ten elected members representing single-member districts and five at-large members. The territory has successfully negotiated with the UK to exchange the appointed members for four more elected representatives. Anguilla added four at-large representatives to its House of Assembly for the first time in 2020, while Montserrat allows voters to vote for up to nine candidates under plurality-at-large voting. 🗳️
