Allegations of sexual harassment and improper representation trigger investigation

👨‍⚖️ Cayman Islands attorney referred to police for misconduct

Keith Myers, a criminal defence attorney in the Cayman Islands, is facing a police investigation following allegations of sexual harassment and improper representation of a client. The investigation was triggered by a recent judgment in the Cayman Islands Court of Appeal, which resulted in the quashing of a serious conviction against one of Myers' clients due to his inappropriate conduct. Myers is accused of sending inappropriate messages to his client, Aisha Jamilah English, and failing to properly represent her after she rejected his advances. 🚨

Despite Myers' denial of the allegations, the appeal court has directed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to ensure the matter is taken forward. The DPP has confirmed that the allegations against Myers have been referred to the police. The Cayman Islands Legal Practitioners Association, while noting that Myers is not a member, stated that it has no statutory authority to investigate, regulate, or sanction individual attorneys. The Legal Council, a new body intended to hold lawyers accountable, has not yet been established under the Legal Services Act passed in 2020. 🏛️

Myers, who was recently removed from the UCCI board by the government, continues to practice and is currently representing several clients in high-profile cases. The full Court of Appeal judgment relating to the allegations against Myers is available on the judicial website. 📚
