šŸš— Cayman Island witnesses over 600 road crashes since 2024 start

The Cayman Island has reported over 600 motor vehicle collisions since the start of 2024, averaging 50 crashes per week, according to the 911 call centre statistics. This alarming figure does not include unreported crashes. Despite numerous safety campaigns, warnings, and roadblocks, drivers continue to engage in risky behaviours such as speeding, drunk driving, and using phones while driving. These behaviours are the primary causes of crashes across the islands.šŸš‘

The National Road Safety Committee (NRSC) has called for urgent action and a redoubling of efforts by drivers to reduce collisions. NRSC Chairperson Eric Bush, the chief officer of the Ministry of Infrastructure, urged everyone to commit to safe driving practices and cultivate a culture of respect, mindfulness, and care on the roads. The committee also encouraged drivers to take the road safety pledge, agreeing to drive responsibly, stay vigilant, educate others, and respect the road.šŸšØ

Following the tragic deaths of two drivers and the injury of two road workers struck by a speeding car within a week, Bush stated that these incidents were entirely avoidable. He emphasized the need for proactive measures to ensure road safety and called for community support to bring about meaningful change. The NRSC is actively collaborating with the private and public sectors and community groups to reduce road fatalities and reckless driving.šŸ›£ļø
