šŸ¦Ž Blue iguana nesting season commences in Cayman Islands

The blue iguana nesting season has kicked off, according to experts at the Blue Iguana Conservation (BIC) facility at the Botanic Park. Notably, Lady Pop, a 33-year-old blue iguana, has started preparations for her nest. She and her younger partner, Iggy Stardust, have previously produced large clutches of eggs, laying 22 last year. Wild iguanas have also been observed mating, with females crossing local roads to find suitable nesting locations near the sea. šŸŒŠ

As part of the mating season, territorial disputes among the iguanas are common. One such incident led to injuries for Forrest, a well-known male iguana residing in the Salina Reserve. Despite being nursed back to health, the incident underscores the challenges faced by the critically endangered species. Drivers in the area are being asked to keep an eye out for the iguanas, with additional warning signs placed to caution motorists. The BIC is also working to ensure the health of the species by carefully pairing iguanas according to their genetics. šŸš—

Due to the success of the breeding program, nest digging has become an issue within the park, particularly in the Children's Area. The BIC staff are working to help the iguanas find more suitable nesting locations. The facility is currently fully occupied, but releases will soon take place to make room for new hatchlings. This will include two-year-old iguanas and some of the larger, older animals who have contributed to the breeding program. To celebrate International Blue Iguana Day, a Family Fun Day will be held at the park's facility on May 5th, featuring guest speaker Ian Redmond, a renowned wildlife biologist and conservationist. šŸŽ‰
