RCIPS Financial Crime Investigation Unit warns residents about the latest financial scam in the Cayman Islands

🚨 Bank thwarts scam attempt targeting customer

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) Financial Crime Investigation Unit (FCIU) is alerting residents about a new financial scam. Scammers contact victims posing as credit card security or bank employees, asking for their assistance in a supposed fraud investigation. This "investigation" involves the victim authorising a transaction that is then transferred to the scammers' accounts. The scammers also instruct the victim not to disclose the investigation to anyone else. 🕵️‍♂️

Butterfield Bank staff noticed an elderly customer attempting an unusual transaction on April 5 and alerted the RCIPS, who intervened in time to prevent the transaction from being completed. The customer did not lose any money. The FCIU is advising residents to be cautious of calls from individuals claiming to be from credit card security asking them to conduct a transaction. The police have clarified that financial investigators will not ask individuals to transfer funds as part of a criminal entrapment. The RCIPS has also commended Butterfield Bank for their prompt action in response to the suspicious transaction. 🏦

Residents who suspect they have been targeted by this scam or receive any suspicious calls are encouraged to contact the RCIPS Financial Crime Investigation Unit. 📞
