👩‍⚖️ Angelyn Hernandez appointed as new chief magistrate

Angelyn Hernandez has been appointed as the new chief magistrate, succeeding Valdis Foldats who recently retired after three years in the role. Foldats was appointed as acting magistrate in 1996 and as magistrate of the Summary Court in 2011. During his tenure, he advocated for a comprehensive approach to justice and fostered collaborative relationships with various criminal justice stakeholder agencies. 🏛️

In a statement about his retirement, Foldats praised these government entities for their support of the courts and their role in ensuring the proper administration of justice. He also expressed his pleasure in working with Hernandez, commending her integrity, expertise, and commitment to the judicial system. Hernandez, who was admitted to the Cayman Islands Bar in 1992, became an acting magistrate in 2014 and a full-time magistrate in 2018. She brings extensive legal experience from both the public and private sector to her new role. ⚖️

Prior to her appointment, Hernandez was the managing partner at Quin and Hampson before it was acquired by Mourant. She then ran her own practice before accepting an invitation to sit as magistrate. In her role, she always aims to balance justice with mercy while upholding the law. Hernandez has also served on the board of directors for various organisations, including Cayman Airways, the Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce, and the Employment Law Review Committee. 👩‍⚖️
