šŸ’” A third of 2022 local deaths could have been prevented

According to the Compendium of Statistics 2022, up to 35% of deaths in the Cayman Islands could have been prevented with better health management and lifestyle changes. The report, which saw the highest number of deaths recorded in a year, showed that the leading causes of death were cardiovascular diseases, cancer, unintentional injuries, diabetes, and neuropsychiatric conditions. Dr Samuel Williams-Rodriguez, the director of Primary Healthcare at the Health Services Authority (HSA), emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups and lifestyle modifications in managing these diseases and increasing life expectancy. šŸ„

The Ministry of Health and Wellness conducted a survey revealing that 70% of adults are overweight, a third are obese, and nearly 8% have high blood sugar levels. These findings highlight the need for better health management and the impact of these conditions on society and productivity. Dr Williams-Rodriguez pointed out that healthcare services in the Cayman Islands have significantly improved and urged people to utilize these services. He stressed the importance of regular doctor visits, especially for patients with chronic diseases, as these can help maintain a comprehensive treatment plan and identify any need for enhanced care. šŸŽ

The HSA has opened new clinics for General Practice, Public Health, and Geriatric Services at the Smith Road Medical Centre and a new Urgent Care Clinic at the Cayman Islands Hospital to improve access to care. Dr Williams-Rodriguez emphasized the importance of choosing the right clinic, explaining that Urgent Care Clinics are for immediate, non-emergent treatment, while General Practice Clinics provide more in-depth care for patients with chronic diseases. The Urgent Care Clinic operates from Monday to Friday, 8am ā€“ 8pm, and 11am ā€“ 8pm on weekends and public holidays. šŸŖ
